Hey, What’s This?

Prairie Art?What the heck IS this?  I was originally attracted to this scene by the lone tree on the hill top, but the more I studied this strange apparatus, the more I liked it as a foreground element.  It looks like the tops of 12 painfully uncomfortable metal straight-back chairs. They form a nice circle, like a group therapy session, but what are they doing in the middle of Nowhere, Nebraska?

I found this scene in the sand hills of NE Nebraska near the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers.  Could it be some sort of yard art?  Doubt it, no one around to appreciate it except a lost photographer.  It probably has some agricultural or livestock application, but I’m at a loss.

If you know what it is, or even think you know, please let me know  Any guess will do; I’d really like to know.

    1. I found out it is called a “bale feeder” for horses. The hay is put inside the ring of chairs and up to twelve horses can fit between the chairs and feed without disruption.
