Whoa Nellie! The exclamation of that famous sports announcer, Keith Jackson, came to mind when I saw this beautiful mane at a local horse show. This was the first horse show I ever attended and had no idea what to expect. This was a show for local amateurs and it was worth the price of admission — free, and my 14 year old granddaughter was “competing” so price was no object.
I know next to nothing about horses. Yeah, they’re big animals with four legs, a relatively low animal IQ, unpredictable disposition and eat a lot, but otherwise, I know nothing. At a horse race, I could tell who was the winner, but a horse show is something else. I didn’t know what to look for in the horse, but I know my granddaughter and was proud of her poise and faux confidence with the beast ten times her size. She was competing in a “pleasure” class, I think they called it, and she was having fun.
The mane on this palomino (I’m namedropping here) was certainly eye-catching, and I couldn’t help but wonder how many man-hours it took to prepare this “do”. This horse was in an English class of some kind, where the rider wears the stingy-brimmed beanie and over-the-calf boots on a tiny saddle. The class looked like it took more time to gussy up the horse and get dressed than there was to ride and have fun.
