City on a Hill

After a long, steep and sometimes winding road, the tour bus finally crested the hill where Jerusalem could be seen spread out before us on a hillside across a deep valley.  Located in the Judean “mountains”, Jerusalem has been called the “city on a hill”.

The city of Jerusalem is over 5,000 years old and to say the least, it has been through a lot: completely destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times (source: Wikipedia, FWIW).   The Old City of Jerusalem is much like it was during Jesus’ time … with utilities.

Jerusalem is the birthplace of three great monotheistic religions: Judaism, Islam and Christianity.  The combined population of worshipers of these three religions comprises over half the human race.  Sacred sites of all three religions are found in Jerusalem.

Thought for the Day:  You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.              Mathew 5:14, part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount
