September First is a very important and celebrated day in Estonia — the first day of school. Flower shops lining the old cobblestone streets of Tallinn are very busy. Every child, from preschool age through high school, was carrying a flower or bouquet to their teacher.
The students dress up and many are escorted to school by their entire family, who are also dressed up. The handsome young lad in the middle photo spoke perfect English, and interpreted everything for his grandmother. The grandmother was reluctant to allow the picture; she wanted to know where I would “show” it. She warmed up when I told her I would show it to my grandson of the same age.
There was a carnival-like atmosphere about the whole town.
