On the west side of San Juan Island is Lime Kiln Point State Park, where a lighthouse guides ships through the Haro Straight between Vancouver Island, British Columbia and the San Juan Islands of Washington State.
The lighthouse was built in 1919, and the scenic outlook is just a short walk from the parking lot. From May to September, the Haro Straight is a major thoroughfare for Orca, Gray whale, porpoise and sea lions. This side of San Juan Island is known as one of the world’s best whale-watching sites.
I was there for four days in mid-October and didn’t see a thing but bull whip kelp.
