Now a ghost town, Rhyolite, Nevada was once a boom town teeming with get-rich-fast gold prospectors. Gold was discovered nearby in 1905. By 1908 there were 5,000 residents of Rhyolite, many employed by the Montgomery Shoshone Mining Company that invested heavily in Rhyolite’s infrastructure … and future.
The richest ore ran out quickly, production slowed dramatically and the mine closed in 1911. The unemployed miners moved on and by 1920 the population had shrunk to zero.
That’s what I call a flash in the pan.
