Journey’s End
After living through 105 cold Nebraska winters, Adela Tikalsky was laid to rest in Niobrara, just a few miles from where she was born. Adela was born in the original farmhouse on the the Holan Homestead (parent’s) and lived there for 65 years.
The farm and family was her life. She never had or needed a driver’s license. Her mind remained sharp and she loved playing cards, especially 10-point pitch — I recall her taking on all-comers at her 100th birthday party.
Her grandsons, great-grandson and grandnephews carried her coffin through the gray morning mist that froze on previous snowfalls. Stepping carefully, taking extra care of their special package, I could hear Adela’s encouragement, “C’mon boys! We’ve got work to do!”
