Notre Dame

There are 87 cathedrals in France, all of them named Notre Dame meaning “First Lady” as in the Virgin Mary. All but one of those cathedrals include “du ______” in their name describing its location; e.g. Notre Dame du Rouen is the cathedral in Rouen, France. The Notre Dame in Paris is the Notre Dame. Period.

Across the Seine from Notre Dame is a rose garden. I thought the trellis would make a nice foreground. And, I wanted to hide some of the ugly scaffolding that shrouds much of the cathedral today. A fire in April brought down the roof and spire; only a miracle prevented a total loss.

Plans are in place to reconstruct the damage in the next five years, which is a mere blink of the eye compared to the 800 years of the cathedral’s existence.

Thought for the Day: A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can change the course of history.
