Native Prairie

Heading south from Red Cloud, Nebraska on US 281 there are few natural landmarks to mark your progress. Rolling hills of corn and bean fields and ranch land lies on both sides of the highway as far as the eye can see.

Just before entering Kansas, there is a gravel road heading west. The road is hidden by the rising ground on both sides of US 281; if not for the sign, “Historical Marker Ahead”, you would not think to look for it.

Welcome to the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, 612 acres of native grassland being restored to its pre-1900 condition. Beautiful!

Thought for the Day: This land was made for you and me.
Lyrics by Woody Guthrie
