Chagga Banana

The predominant tribe around Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania is the Chagga. Except for a few Maasai, most of the people I met with during my two week visit were Chagga.

One of the highlights of the trip was a dinner hosted by the Bishop of the Northern Diocese, Dr. Frederick Shoo, an elaborate buffet on his sprawling front lawn. Dessert for the evening was “Chagga Banana”, a favorite of the tribe and a tradition for honored guests.

The roasted goat was not a surprise, I had it before on my previous trip in 2016, but had never heard it called “Chagga Banana”. It’s much better than it looks.

Thought for the Day: The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.
