A national cemetery recently opened in Sarpy County, Nebraska. The Visitor Center and Entrance are still under construction. Young saplings are planted along the roads carving through rolling farmland that yielded soybeans last year. Right now, it’s hard to tell what it is. Other than the wooden sign at the entrance, behind the construction equipment, there is nothing to tell you it is a cemetery.
Several veterans were interred during the dedication on September 27, 2016. For now, their burial sites are marked with a temporary grave marker — a short metal sign, painted olive green, with vital information sealed behind a plastic sheet. The markers are barely visible from the road twenty feet away.
Traditional white crosses are on order to replace the temporary markers and mark the veteran’s final resting place forever.
